THE LIVING CLASSROOM

What is The Living Classroom?

The Living Classroom is a customizable, nature-based education program that aligns learning with nature’s deep patterns and weaves together science, storytelling, and hands-on exploration. Students don’t just learn about the world—they engage with it as active participants, discovering how culture, ecology, and community are interconnected.

Designed with flexibility in mind, The Living Classroom can be tailored to fit the unique needs of each school. From standalone workshops to full-year integration, schools can embed biocultural learning, indigenous perspectives, and systems thinking into everyday teaching, transforming education into something meaningful and connected.

In addition to working with students, The Living Classroom supports teachers with practical tools, real-world applications, and cross-curricular strategies that bring these approaches to life in their classrooms.

Our Approach

  • Cross-Curricular Integration
We collaborate with teachers to seamlessly weave biocultural learning into existing subjects—science, social studies, art, and language—fostering deep, interdisciplinary connections.

  • Learning Through Nature & Culture
Rooting education in place-based experiences that reconnect students to the rhythms of the natural world and deepen their sense of belonging in their communities.

  • Storytelling & Perspective-Sharing
Bringing together indigenous wisdom, scientific inquiry, and personal narratives to help students see learning as a lifelong journey of discovery.

  • Systems Thinking & Real-World Application
Encouraging learners to recognize patterns, relationships, and interdependencies—moving beyond isolated facts to meaningful understanding.

  • Hands-On Exploration & Inquiry
Engaging students in active learning through citizen science, ecological restoration, design challenges, and traditional crafts.

  • Teacher & Student Well-Being
Supporting educators and learners in rediscovering the joy of curiosity, reflection, and meaningful contribution.
